The Swope Art Museum's Summer Art Studio program has been fostering creativity in the youth of Terre Haute for over 20 years, and we are thrilled to embark on another exciting summer of artistic exploration. This year, we are shaking things up with two engaging offerings for our young artists.
First, we have our traditional week-long art classes, where Monday through Friday, kids will meet for two hours to learn from our talented instructors, delving into various artistic mediums and techniques. Additionally, we are introducing our new Workshops – two three-hour sessions on the same day, providing a captivating introduction to fresh and exciting art forms. Parents can choose to enroll their children in one or both workshops, and for those attending both, we welcome them to stay with us for the entire day.

June 10 -June 16, 9 a.m.-11 a.m. Landscape Oil Painting
Instructor: Michael Neary & Wyatt Lawson
Age Group: 13-18 years old
Immerse yourself in the captivating world of landscape painting with our week-long class dedicated to oil painting and the art of plein air. Guided by our experienced instructors, you'll embark on a journey that combines the beauty of nature with the timeless medium of oil paint.
June 10 -June 16, 12 p.m.-2 p.m. Stellar Sculptures!
Instructor: Korinne Cantin
Age Group: 11-18 years old
In this class, we will create a variety of different 3-D projects! Try your hand at basketry, paper mâché, plaster casting, and many more!
June 24 -June 28, 9 a.m.-11 a.m. Mixed Media Portraits
Instructor: Jennifer Weeks
Age Group: 8-11 years old
In this class, students will sharpen their skills in drawing people and faces while exploring different media. Students will learn how to create finished portraits by combing different mediums like paint, pencil, and collage. By the end of the class, each student will have multiple portraits to display.
June 24 -June 28, 12 p.m.-2 p.m. Experimental Watercolor
Instructor: Deanna Householder
Age Group: 11-18 years old
This watercolor class will be focused on experimenting with watercolor paints with a variety of techniques to create art that is more abstract in nature. Students will learn different techniques without the addition of other things as well as how to use salt, rubbing alcohol, and other materials to create various textures while using watercolor.
July 8 -July 12, 9 a.m.- 11a.m. Character Design
Instructor: Madison King
Age Group: 13-18 years old
Have you ever wanted to design your own hero? Or sidekick? Or even a villain? In this class, students will learn the basics of character design. They will go over shape language, design, and how to create simplified mascots. By the end of the week, students will have created a complete character sheet featuring different poses and concepts for their lead character.
July 8 -July 12, 12 p.m.- 2 p.m. Wildlife Acrylic Painting
Instructor: Ainsley Deuchene
Age Group: 11-18 years old
Immerse yourself in the vibrant world of wildlife through the captivating medium of acrylic painting. In this week-long class, you'll embark on a journey to capture the majesty and resilience of nature's most fascinating creatures.
July 15 -July 19, 9 a.m.- 11 a.m. Dress to Mess
Instructor: Sarah Trover
Age Group: 4-7 years old
Explore making artwork using your entire body and get messy in the process. This class will integrate all five of the senses while teaching the basics of art. Ages 4-7 can explore a variety of art materials including clay, paint, and collage, during this class.
July 22 -July 26, 9 a.m.- 2 p.m. Art of the Theatre
Instructor: Tina Ginopolos
Age Group: 7-18 years old
This two-session studio will allow artists to explore the connection between fine art and theater. Artists will start the day off by creating art projects to use as props and costumes for the final reader’s theater performance. Artists will break for an hour for lunch at 11 (please bring your own) and theater games. The afternoon session will be spent doing warm-ups, acting exercises, and rehearsing an original script inspired by a piece from the museum’s collection. Family and museum patrons are invited to watch the final performance on Friday at 12:30 pm.
July 29 -August 2, 9 a.m.- 11a.m. Wonderous Mandalas
Instructor: Judith Irving
Age Group: 7-10 years old
Mandalas are a wonderous artform that brings much beauty to this world. A Mandala is an array of geometric or organic symbols that is usually circular in form. In fact, "mandala" is a Sanskrit word that means "circle" or “center.” In many Asian cultures the Mandala is a spiritual symbol used during meditation, representing the universe. In this art class our young artists will learn several techniques of how to make a mandala from drawing on paper with tools, to transferring images on coffee filters and even making aluminum foil mandalas that they can proudly hang on the wall.
July 29 -August 2, 12 p.m.- 2 p.m. Colorful Quilling and Paper Shaping
Instructor: Judith Irving
Age Group: 9-12 years old
Quilling is the technique of rolling and shaping strips of paper to create an image. This art form goes back thousands of years to the Egyptians but was only made popular once practiced in Europe during the medieval times. During the Renaissance, Italian and French monks created beautiful quillings of biblical scenes for wall hangings. In this art class, our young artists will learn how to create fantastic images with strips of rolled paper that they can proudly hang on the wall.
August 5 August 8, 9 a.m.- 11 a.m. Comics 101
Instructor: Madison King
Age Group: 13-18 years old
In this class, students will explore the world of comics! Students will learn some of the history and development of comics, including paneling and creating a plot. Throughout the week, students will work toward creating a one-page comic of their very own!
August 5- August 8, 12 p.m.- 2 p.m.Drawing and Composition
Instructor: Hunter Greenwell
Age Group: 13-18 years old
This is a course for those interested in developing their skills in sketching and drawing. Students will learn new techniques and tools to confidently render what they see onto paper, such as sight-measuring, gesture and intuitive drawing, and line weight just to name a few examples. Students will practice sketching objects from life, and by the end of the week, they will have amassed a new set of skills to draw with confidence!

Junk Journaling
Create a handmade book by repurposing ordinary, everyday materials! Try several techniques to decorate and embellish the cover and pages...think scrapbooking with a twist!
Afternoon Workshop 1 p.m. - 4,p.m.
Mixed Media Madness
Experiment and create with a mixture of different materials! Try your hand at metal tooling by embossing designs into aluminum sheets. The metal tooling design will become an embellishment for a handpainted keepsake box. The box will be painted with a fun, marbled paper technique.

Morning Workshop 9 a.m -12 p.m.
Explore: Needle Felting
This workshop will focus on exploring needle felting forms and techniques to create objects. Students will learn how to create both 2-D needle felted works and 3-D forms on a small scale during the workshop. These forms could be animals, food, or another object of their interest.
Afternoon Workshop 1 p.m. - 4 p.m.
Explore: Embroidery
Come explore embroidery as an artform and learn the basic stitches! This workshop will cover some embroidery artists, stitches, and give student a chance to start a small embroidery piece to explore different stiches. More advanced stitches may be shown depending on the skill level of the artists.

Faux Stained Glass
In this workshop, we will discover the beauty of stained glass without any tricky glass cutting! We will learn about stained glass history and how artists created those dazzling designs. But don't worry, we won't be using any sharp tools! Instead, we'll explore safe and fun ways to make our own stained glass-inspired artworks. By the end of the workshop, you'll have your very own colorful creation to proudly display at home.

Recycled Houses
Get ready to unleash your creativity as we dive into the world of eco-friendly architecture. Using recycled cardboard and other materials, we'll construct buildings and structures of our choice, turning them into a bustling metropolis by the end of the class. Let's build, create, and turn trash into treasure as we craft our very own recycled cityscape together!

Printmaking
Throughout this workshop, we'll explore traditional printmaking techniques, trying our hand at 2-3 different methods. From linocuts to monoprints, each technique will unlock new possibilities for creativity. By the end of our journey, you'll have created your very own collection of unique prints to showcase your artistic flair! Let's roll up our sleeves and let the ink fly!
